Castlevania 2 Simon's Quest Part 2

Ok so here is the latest on this piece. I have learned to really slow down and work out the details on a piece so that I am not rushing through things just for the sake of getting them done.
I think that this is the longest that I have ever taken on a piece before (about 2 weeks so far).
At the last post I had reached a point where I had the major structure and composition done.
However there were some things that I didn't like about the piece. So I continued working on and made the following edits:

-The cross was not working, so I decided to make Simon holding a whip instead. That seemed to fit the theme of the painting a lot more.
-I worked on the details of the vamipre more...making him more beastly and grotesque
-I also decided to add flame effects as if the vampire is bursting into flames in the sunlight.
-I tweaked the colors to make it a bit more vibrant
I really like this taking your time thing, it's pretty great and the end slower is a lot better. It gives you time to look over what you have done and really work things to perfection.

I am still not sure about Simon's face...I might work on it some more (faces are the worst for me I think...) so that will take some practice. Overall through I dig how it's coming.

Maybe I will give it a day and noodle over it some more before I call it done. We'll see, but I am happy with it so far.

Stuff I learned this summer..

Here are some things I learned this summer:
1. I can paint all day long but only in about 4 hour increments with a break in the middle. That's about 8 hours total when not working and 4 hours a day when I am working (after work). Weekends are spotty it depends on what is happening but usually I will spend all day on Sat and then take a break on Sunday.
2. After finishing work I need to recharge and work on thumbnails for my next idea/piece and be around people and enjoy life for a bit.
3. Chris Oatley's Painting Drama is the best investment I have ever made. It has taught me to really focus on the basics and research and to slow down.
4. I have to lead up to starting a painting by doing thumbnails first and then reference study and then color palette selection which take about 2 to 3 days to a week (actual painting takes about 3 or 4 days depending on the piece).
5. As before mentioned I am only going to be doing original work/ideas for shows and conventions. I will of course always love the Marvel and the DC stuff.I think though that a true test of how far I have progressed will be if I can start to sell original work created from scratch. I still have left over work from previous cons so I will try and maybe sell those at ComicConn but for Baltimore I hope to have original work only* to sell. We'll see how it goes.
6. There will be more learning as time goes on but what I have learned has been awesome so far! Time to keep pushing!

Mystical Crimelords (until I come up with a better title)

Here are some sketches for an idea that I had called "Mystical Crimelords" the idea here is to make a number of pieces of mystical beings who are heads of secret crime organizations. I don't have a set number just yet but I would like to have several done for Baltimore Comic Con in a few months. Additionally, I think that I have decided to not do fan art prints anymore. This is not to say that I won't do them ever, but I will most likely not make fan art prints for shows. After reading Travis Hanson's blog about establishing yourself, I think I am going to go fully indie and make my own work. I know this will be harder to sell and I probably won't sell much for a while but at least I will be putting more of my own work out there. I always liked doing my own stuff anyway. More to come soon.
