What type of art you are going to pursue (traditional or digital) or both - Part I

Are you a traditional artist or a Digital one? Is there a difference really?
Do you have to be one or the other, you can of course be both.
For years I worked with newsprint, and pastels, and charcoal sticks, and conte crayon and pencils and erasers (and sometimes I still do). However, nothing is easier to and control than using a computer and software program like photoshop. On top of that the combination of both tools can get you great results.
So do you need to be a traditional artist over a digital one? Why not be both at the same time?

Traditional Art
I didn’t have a computer growing up, at least not the kinds that are available today. I spent a lot of time drawing and copying comics as a child and also coloring. The painting bug came much later.
I am a self taught artist, which means that I never went to art school or graduated with an art degree.
Instead, I took a few art classes in school and after school would practice artwork whenever I got the chance. In college I took my first drawing class and fell in love with it. I got a lot of practice learning other types of drawing styles and using other tools. At that point I had never had access to live model before.
The only downwside to the traditional drawing method was the process felt laboriously slow and messy.
On top of that, I was wary of making a mistake. I would come to the end of an hour long drawing class only to find one detail was off, or the model was not symmetrical or something else was wrong.
I was more impressed with artists who were able to get wonderful results without using a computer (such as all of the old masters). So I stuck with it I loved it that much.

Digital Art
Enter the computer. I didn’t get my first computer until I was in my late 20’s. We had access to design programs in college at but nothing like the programs that are available today.
What I loved about using a computer (esp. on a Mac) was the ability to create anything you wanted. There were no limits, and that was really liberating. I still continued to practice in addition to taking several online courses. I have gotten better over time, and I still continue to experiment with different programs.
As I have said there are many many ways to get to the end result, and none of them are the only way,
this allows for a lot of variation and experimentation.

Using Both
The one thing that I don’t like about digitial work, is it felt like a lot of the natural gestures and hand movements were not being captured. There is a way that the final work can look a little artificial,
and after a time I missed the natural look of traditional work. I also was frustrated that I could not always have a computer with me 24/7. I would not be able to capture ideas when I had them. I did have a sketch book with me at all times, but I had to wait until I got home to finish the idea.

So, I decided to combine both approaches, and started sketches traditionally and turning them into digital work when I got home. I will get a little bit more into those details for next time.

Baltimore Comic-con Wrap Up

Well, the end of another comic-con has come and gone as this past weekend I attended the Baltimore comic-con. This was by far the biggest convention that I had ever done. The difference with bigs shows like this is that there are so many things to look at and see, that if you are a customer, you don't know where to go or where to look. As a result, I didn't sell anything near the Connecticut show.
In the end though it looks like even if I didn't sell a lot of prints, I did get a chance to meet new artists and see a lot of cool cos-play pics. So without further ado....

Now back to work!

Asbury Park Comic Con

Just a few pics from this past weekend. It seems that the "Krang" and "R.OB." were the most popular. On to the next one.

Coles Gallery Composite Test

Composite test for gallery show...

Self portrait

Recently I have been exploring new ways to merge the use of Photoshop with some of the blending tools in Painter. I really like one particular tool in Painter that gives the texture in the image a brush-stroke like feel to it. I have been practicing that a lot more as well as with the layer setting tools in Photoshop (but nor over doing it too much). Lastly I also apply a texture to give the piece the sense that it's painted on a canvas. I may or may not use the canvas bit for the submission that I am going to be working on for the Coles gallery coming up in the next few weeks we'll see.

I like to finish things..

A while ago I was working on a personal project for a friend of a friend, and it got shelved. I like to finish things that I start so instead I put my own spin on it and added a few elements to this to make it something interesting to look at. Voila!

Street Fighter 25 Submission: Update!!

So Street Fighter is turning 25 (25th Anniversary!) and as a result Capcom is having a Street Fighter 25th anniversary contest where your art work can be featured. So I of course submitted work for it.
The two themes behind the contest were "I am a Street Fighter" or "Street Fighter 25". So I went with the former for this one. I actually did it as an illustration first, but then decided to re-do it as a painting, because I realized that I had more time. Which was cool, so I was able to take my time and do a proper painting. As always, there are some things that I think worked for this, but as always anatomy continues to be a challenge. So, I will definitely be working on that.
At any rate, on to the next!

Update*****
I recently found out that my submission was accepted to the Street Fighter 25h Anniversary tribute book. I am super excited about this, and I wasn't even sure that I liked this piece. Woo hoo!!!!

MOCCA 2012 Wrap Up!

So another year has come and gone for MOCCA fest, and it was a good one. I caught up with a lot of folks that I met last year. The first day started slowly, but then after a while it picked up pretty quickly, and I sold a few books. The funny part is that because of the theme of the book, a lot of people didn't know about a lot of the more obscure games in the book. However no matter, MOCCA fest 2012 was fun, and I am already thinking about what to do for next year (maybe Saturday morning cartoons? I dunno.) Most of the days were spent trying to sell books, networking with other artists looking at some great stuff, and basically enjoying the show. While I wasn't selling, I also got in a lot of sketch practice on the spot. All in all it was a great time. Now, back to business.

Six Million Dollar Man and Sasquatch and MoCCA fest.

Ok so  back in the day I was obsessed with the Six Million Dollar man. There was one episode where he met up with a bionic Sasquatch (this is awesome classic tv people...and you can't beat that).
This one was actually a sketch that I did when I first started this blog way back when. I def. like to go back to earlier things that I have  done and try to improve upon them. So, here it is. The Bionic Man and Sasquatch. It's a weird obscure thing to paint and post I know. Now that it's done I can move on.

In other news, I finally sent off my book to be printed for Mocca fest (woot!). Tonight I am going to pick up the redesigned banner, and that's all that she wrote. I should then be ready for the show next week. I will do a post show wrap up after the show is done. I am pretty excited to network and meet new (fellow) solo artists.
I have also submitted an application to be a part of the Asbury Park Comic con. Last year I wanted to do more than one, so  I am gonna try for two this year, esp if I have all of the work done already (re: book and banner)
Stay tuned for a pre-show and post show wrap up!

Nintendo Tribute: Ducktales

This week tribute is Ducktales, which is a game that I played a lot and was surprisingly addictive.
I don't think this one was as popular as the other main Nintendo games, such as Metroid, Mike Tyson, etc. etc. however this game was still a fun one to play. Nothing really special in terms of process that I did for this one, just the same basic steps. Hope you like!
