Oatley Art Academy Shape, Form and Gesture Homework

I am currently taking an online course called "The Oatley Art" academy, taught by Chris Oatley who is a former animator fro Disney Studios. So far I am learning a lot! about structure and theory and about a lot of ideas that I had never been exposed to until now. This is a posting about gesture, shape and form as part of a homework assignment. The idea here is that we would find several works of classical art and find the main gestures in each of the pieces.

Below are my results:

Shazam re-work!

A quick re-work of Shazam (one of the first things that I had done a while ago). I am a big fan of reworking things over and over. I might do this again at some point.

Amazing Friends!!!!!

Who loves Spiderman and His Amazing Friends as much as I did?
I used to go crazy over this show, and still do. Once I found out they episodes were on Netflix, I loaded them up immediately and watched them back to back.

Anyway I am going to get back to posting more stuff that I love doing (with a little experimentation in there as well with different subject matter.) I have mostly been staying away from comic stuff because I feel like so many people have been doing that, and I wanted to try and tackle something more original. You know what though, screw it, why not just do stuff that you like.

I am also amazed because I got to finish this right before the hurricane hit. I def., hope that everyone is safe.

Robo-Hike!

A quick work up that I did from something that I sketched in my pad on the train.
I tried a new technique where I made sure to get the values right first and then* added the colors and the atmospheric effects.
I like the way that this came out..I think I am on to something.

Another Mega Man piece. One day i'll have to do something different.

Awesome Dragon!

I have been a little m.i.a. in terms of posting. I have been taking a lot more time to work on compositions and lighting and color and doing a lot of practice.
This is something that I recently finished however. So I figured that I would share this one with you guys. See ya!

Coles Gallery Composite Test

Composite test for gallery show...

Self portrait

Recently I have been exploring new ways to merge the use of Photoshop with some of the blending tools in Painter. I really like one particular tool in Painter that gives the texture in the image a brush-stroke like feel to it. I have been practicing that a lot more as well as with the layer setting tools in Photoshop (but nor over doing it too much). Lastly I also apply a texture to give the piece the sense that it's painted on a canvas. I may or may not use the canvas bit for the submission that I am going to be working on for the Coles gallery coming up in the next few weeks we'll see.

Space Ghost Quits (Fixing Values)

This is just a quick fix that I did to this piece, the values were really off, so I wanted to fix this one since I liked the way that this came out. I also added the sun glare in the background.

I like to finish things..

A while ago I was working on a personal project for a friend of a friend, and it got shelved. I like to finish things that I start so instead I put my own spin on it and added a few elements to this to make it something interesting to look at. Voila!

The Sketchbook Project

About a week or so ago, I was in Brooklyn and I wandered into The Brooklyn Art Library. (Who even knew that it was there?). Basically the library was home to a massive library of sketchbooks.
The way that the library worked was that you signed up for a library card, and then once you got one, you could check out one of the sketchbooks to view. The work that people submitted ranged from doing sketches to completely transforming the book and making it into a completely different element (like a fold out pop up book.)

I found out that the project was part of a massive global project called..."The Sketchbook Project".
People that are interested can basically buy a book, (for $25) and then all that you have to do is fill the book with whatever you want. You can also pick any topic that you want as well (I of course decided to do a "sketchbook" since that is that I pretty much do anyway).
So I have joined the project and have gotten a few pages in (above is  sample page).

When you are done you can drop the book off back at the library or mail it back. I will probably just drop it off since I am in Brooklyn all the time anyway.
I will post my progress as I go. Sweet!

GPF Portrait (It's been a while)

Hi guys, it's been a really long time. I have been super busy with actually taking on a few projects and have been working on drawing a lot, so I have been a little bit more selective about what I have been posting and instead I have been working on doing lots and lots of drawing..lots and lots and lots of drawing. However I figured that I should post something every once in a while, so here is a recent portrait that I did for a friend of mine. (He also actually got married yesterday too. So I figured that this would be an appropriate posting). 'Til next time.

Space Ghost Calls it quits....

I like to pretend that one day The Space Ghost decided that flying around the cosmos hunting down bad guys was some b.s. and decided to quit. He did some stints on various sitcoms and tv shows in the late 80's and 90's. He then finally landed a gig as a talk show host on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network (Space Ghost Coast to Coast). Congrats Space Ghost!!!!!

Street Fighter 25 Submission: Update!!

So Street Fighter is turning 25 (25th Anniversary!) and as a result Capcom is having a Street Fighter 25th anniversary contest where your art work can be featured. So I of course submitted work for it.
The two themes behind the contest were "I am a Street Fighter" or "Street Fighter 25". So I went with the former for this one. I actually did it as an illustration first, but then decided to re-do it as a painting, because I realized that I had more time. Which was cool, so I was able to take my time and do a proper painting. As always, there are some things that I think worked for this, but as always anatomy continues to be a challenge. So, I will definitely be working on that.
At any rate, on to the next!

Update*****
I recently found out that my submission was accepted to the Street Fighter 25h Anniversary tribute book. I am super excited about this, and I wasn't even sure that I liked this piece. Woo hoo!!!!

MOCCA 2012 Wrap Up!

So another year has come and gone for MOCCA fest, and it was a good one. I caught up with a lot of folks that I met last year. The first day started slowly, but then after a while it picked up pretty quickly, and I sold a few books. The funny part is that because of the theme of the book, a lot of people didn't know about a lot of the more obscure games in the book. However no matter, MOCCA fest 2012 was fun, and I am already thinking about what to do for next year (maybe Saturday morning cartoons? I dunno.) Most of the days were spent trying to sell books, networking with other artists looking at some great stuff, and basically enjoying the show. While I wasn't selling, I also got in a lot of sketch practice on the spot. All in all it was a great time. Now, back to business.
