Happy Halloween--Monst-HER!

Here is something that I did a rework of from a while back. The "Monst-Her" is a she creature from the swamp that has shown up just in time for Halloween. I redid this one with a very limited color palette.
I'm pretty psyched about how this came out, I hope you enjoy and have a safe and Happy Halloween!

New Url, New name, Back to basics again

So one or two new things to note. The first is that I have decided to change the url of the blog from "murdockink" to just plain old "moemurdock.blogspot.com". I think that this will be easier to remember and make for a more unified appearance across the blog, the cghub page, deviant art, etc. etc.
Rather than having 10 different urls for everything.

Next is that after listening to the latest interview on Chris Oatley's blog with artist Noah Bradley I heard a few things that were some sobering wakeup calls.
The main thing is that it has become apparent how many artists are out there trying to make a living at doing art, while I am still trying to get the basics down. In order to even get anywhere to the point of excellence I am going to need to practice a lot more, like a lot lot more, a lot. Which I will do of course over the next year.

In the end that means focusing on the things that I need to practice. while not worrying or caring about likes or page views. This will help me to get to the core areas that I need to work on without all of the undue pressure (I will still do the occasional comic-con of course to sell off the old prints).

Lastly I am going to focus on a few key things at a time to make this process a lot less daunting thus alleviating guilt if I don't finish a painting in a week.
They are as follows:
-Composition studies from the masters
-Color composition studies from the old masters
-Noses (because I really can't draw them much less paint them)
-The face, eyes and hands

Lastly, to make sense of all of the stuff that I want to get done, I have broken up what I want to do into short-term goals (1-2 weeks), medium length goals (1-2 months) and long term goals (1 year)

I will of course post progress here.

Part of the short term goals are to do a lot of composition studies as mentioned so here those are all work by John Singer Sargent:

The goal is to really get the composition right not to 100% copy accurately. I will post more as I do them. I'll also be throwing some sketches and WIP in there too for shits and gigs...

See ya

CG Hub Halloween Contest

Hey all,

It's been a while, but I have been taking the time to work on this Halloween theme contest on the CGHub site. I also decided at the same time to paint on top of the values instead of building up from the ground up like I normally do. The results were some that I was not happy with.
As a general rule that I think I will follow...when you are working on something for a deadline, don't also try to work in experiments at the same time. It will take you twice as long to get the final product when you are painting the same thing over and over.
Anyway, here it is, just a few more tweaks and it will be good to go.

Painting Drama 1: Audacious Accomplishment Painting 1 Completed

Other the past several months I have been taking this amazing online course through the Chris Oatley academy of art. Our final project for the course is for us to redesign 2 scenes from a movie of our choice. After a bit of searching I decided to redesign two scenes from "The Grey" starring Liam Neeson into a space scene.
You can click on this link for the movie description. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1601913/?ref_=sr_5

1. Background:
The movie centers around a man (Neeson) who crash lands in the wilderness along with a plane full of prison inmates. Along the way the men are pursued by wolves and fight nature as they try to survive.
In the film Neeson finds a letter from his his in the crash, which continues to be an object of hope and inspiration through the film. So I wanted to include this in my piece.

Below is a basic summary of my process that I used to get to the final image along with a few notes along the way. I hope you enjoy:

2. Sketching/Ideas:
In all I would say that I sketched over a 100+ ideas before I narrowed it down. You can see some of those sketches here:

Full list of sketches:

Final list of sketches:

Below are the initial sketches for my idea. I wanted to focus on the crash the expression of the character and the sense of sadness/despair.

After the last sketch I realized that I didn't like it, so I kept going. I finally came up with a different idea that was not as boring and that captured the sense of the scene the way that I wanted.

3. Beginning the final work:
From here I kept going with the final work, below are screens of the process step by step. I reworked the drawing a bit in places until I came up with the final line drawing below.

4. Final painting process:

Final steps:

5. Final Version 1:
I came up with the final version below, BUT I was not happy with the face. So....
I went back and did a few studies and reworked it a bit:

...but I still wasn't happy with it. So I kept trying:

6. FINAL:
Here is the final: I feel the expression reads a lot better in this version, and the hair and the hair is a lot better as well, and he looks less like a mannequin. Once done, I put it away for a few days and then came back to it, and realized that I was pretty happy with the way it came out.

7. References, Brushes, Color Palettes:
Here are some extras. Images that I used for reference, color palettes and brushes.

8. In conclusion:
Let me say that this class has been one of the best experiences that I have had, not only in approaching my art work, but also in how I think about my ideas and design to the work. Instead of just rushing to throw stuff down, I took a really long time to go through the lessons that Chris has put together and to think critically. I have never worked so hard on anything as much as this one until I took this class, and I am so glad that I did.  One down, one more to go. I plan on finishing the second panting before the end of the year.
A big THANK YOU to the group for the support to one another and the inspiration.
