What I’m doing with my week off?

Instead of talking about software this week (I promise that I will),
I wanted to talk about relaxing. Every seven weeks I take the week off. That means no working on new paintings, no setting up work. I do this because after a time, your brain needs a break, and you will burn out. Breaks are important, they recharge the mind, and combat idea fatigue.
By the time the week is over, you are hopefully itching to get back to working with new inspirations and things to work on. To give you a sense of how I am spending my time here is a short list of things that I plan on doing with my “week off”.

Play Playstation or something else fun:

I love* playing games. So much so that I try to cut down on it and avoid doing it when I am doing work.
It is a bit of a time suck. When I have the time, I love getting lost in an immersive story. Not to mention it’s fun.
You don’t have to buy a Playstation, but the idea of “play” is really important and should not be overlooked.
Try finding something you like doing, just as fun and do it all week. The hardest is not feeling guilty you are not “working” on something. You will get back to it eventually, and will attack work with renewed interest.

Sleep:

I read an article recently suggesting the body needs at least 7 hours of sleep to recharge, renew and reinvigorate itself. That is why then it is important you get as much sleep as possible. You can* feel the difference between 5 hours of sleep and 7 hours of sleep. The body is just ready to get up after a good nights rest instead of wanting to hit the snooze button. Even when working on projects you should try and get as much rest as possible it will help you to be ready to tackle those day job projects, night job projects and everything in between.

Be with people/See your friends:

We’re all busy but when I am on break week, I find that is the best time to be with friends and see people.
Share a meal, talk on the phone, just catch up. It’s easy to let maintaining friendships slip when you and are in flow and are lost in projects. Hours go by before you know it. The opportunity is there to connect with folks and take care of the relationships that are important to you. You will then have a sense of comfort when you are back in work mode.

Make lists:

I will write about this separately sometime, but one of the ways I get ideas down on paper for later is to make idea lists. This is a process where I carry a note pad, or a piece of paper and write down painting ideas that come to me. They most often come to me when I am doing something different like shopping or washing dishes.
I think this is because my brain is not as crowded with “stuff”.  I can just exist in the pressure-free space and my brain will come up with ideas from things I see in life. They will just “pop” in there. When they do, I write them down and they will be there later when I decide to go back to the drawing board.

Draw from life:

Carry a sketch book and draw everything you see (this is still allowed). Drawing from life keeps the practice up and is a “pressure-free” way to keep up the observation skills, without a whole lot of pressure about it being perfect. In fact you can even practice “drawing badly”. Do something different like draw with your left hand, and see what you come up with.

Write:

I write everyday for 25 minutes. This is a good one, and I will expand on this at a different point and time.

Meditate:

I do this every morning for 5 minutes when I am working on projects. However, when I am not working on anything it works so much more. Meditating is a great excuse to relax, and achieve focus. I have been doing it now for a few months, and I plan on continuing with it. It helps me stay focused easier, and keeps me relaxed and less “on edge”. Relaxing takes practice, meditation is one of the ways to help you do that.

The suggestions above are just a few of the ideas that I have to help you relax.
At the end of the week, I should feel ready to get back on the horse and jump back into project work. You don’t need to do the same as the above, in fact I suggest that you come up with your own list of relaxing to do items. Whatever you do, the important thing is that you give your mind space to wander and enjoy life so that you can attack the next project with inspiration from a good week off. What are some of your favorite ways to relax and give your brain a break?

Holiday RAWK 2017 (Setting up your space the night before the event)

Prepping and deciding for your show

Tomorrow is the Holiday RAWK Show and I am pretty close to getting everything in place to be ready for the event. There are just a few items I need to tighten up and I spent last weekend pulling it all together. Last week I went to check out the space and get a preview of the event, as well and get a sense of the things that I will need to be ready for Dec 20th. Below is a little bit of a run down that I hope will give you some ideas about how to prepare, wether it’s for your fist show our your 50th.

How to prepare

The advisory board for the event is really top notch, which has been a really huge help.
There have been a few weekly calls, ongoing e-mails, constant contact for people reaching out for advice and looking for help. It also helps that the festival coordinators are very organized. I can’t imagine the amount of time it takes to pull something like this together. It must be a monumental challenge to coordinate. This has taken at least 60% of the work off of the artists plate and made it so that we can just focus on the work and get things ready for the event. Even, if you don’t have a super top notch organizing team to pull the event together, at the very least have a contact person available for questions and concerns. It’s going to save a lot of time and energy.

Checking out the space in advance

As part of he set up we were given the opportunity to check out the space and see what the layout is going to look like. We got an email with a floor plan and a designated area which was also helpful.
However, that is not quite the same as being able to go and check out the location and see the actual space where you are going to show your work. That is a big difference between this show and the other. shows. This was also monumentally helpful as I was trying to decide what I am going to prepare for the event. Now after seeing the space I have a sense of what makes the most sense to prepare. I have a sense of how much real estate I will need and what the logistics would look like. I can definitely project, but will need to make sure to bring extra power supplies and power strips and account for the people that might get in the way. The key thing to note here is that checking out the logistics of the space is a key to getting prepared way in advance.

Doing a dry run

Last weekend I took the night before to do a test/dry run of what I am projecting for the show.
This meant setting up all of the parts in my apartment/studio so that I don’t have to fumble with setup on the day of the show. I set up the projector, laid out the business cards and oriented my space so that I can get a sense of what is going to happen the day of. Normally most shows don’t give you the luxury of much prep time. This however has been another key in helping me decide to project and prepare.
It will also be important to get the measurements as close as possible to the day of, just to try and simulate the day of experience.

Getting ready the night before

I have made my e-mails lists, I have my business cards ready, I have my slide show set up and ready to go, and I have all of my hanging utensils in place. That means that I don’t have anything left to do the night before. (side note: because I am going to be projecting from an iPad, anything can go wrong, so it is going to help if you are doing a set up like this, to also have an alternative method to project from a source, in case of technical glitches, etc. etc. So I will also make a copy of the showcase on my phone as well. Prep your setup as much as you can. That leaves you space to relax and enjoy the show the day of the event.

Next time I will post some photos, and give a round up of how everything went.

RAW Artists Showcase Holiday RAWK 2017

The RAW artists network is a group of artists from all different disciplines that hold events to showcase their work all over the US (and possibly internationally?). The types of different artists include all kinda from painters, designers, accessory makers, to performance and makeup artists. Judging from the previous photos and events, it looks to be quite the spectacle. Well,  I am really happy and excited to announce I have just been accepted to participate in the RAW artists’ RAWK Holiday Showcase for 2017.
This feels so different than any other showcase I have participated in before. Unlike other shows, there is an application process that you need to go through in order to be accepted. Then once you are accepted, you have the ability to showcase your work in a professional, yet stylish art space.

You are also given a lot* of logistical guidance on how to prepare for the show logistically, how to promote the show, get the word out, sell tickets to promote yourself and more.
There are weekly phone calls leading up to the show (I have one on Tuesday of this week, followed up a final walk through of the space and a detailed schedule of what needs to happen leading up to the event.)
It really really feels professionally done, and that they give you a lot of help in getting ready for the event. I am really excited about it, and will be writing about the process to get ready for the event in the next few weeks. This will give you an idea of how to prepare for an art show such as this one and I am sure I will learn a lot and will be happy to pass along what I learn.

The artists showcase takes place on December 20, 2017 at
Cathedral Hall
380 Montgomery Street
 Jersey City, NJ 07302
You can check out a link to the event here:

-You can checkout my RAW artists profile here:
(you create one to showcase your work and sell tickets)

Tickets for the event are pre sold (not at the door),
this replaces the need to pay for a table that most spaces charge.

-To get a sense of the event from past showcases you can check out previous photos here:

-Even better is a welcome video where you can see it all in action:

I am super excited about being a part of this and will write more in the weeks to come.

My new Red Bubble store!

I am pleased to announce that I have a new red bubble store.
People (from time to time) have asked me if I sell stuff online, and so I figured that I should probably do that. Here you can get ipod covers, shirts, scarves, and more.
